Chapter 11

Mandy Goodwin and Hughes Hamilton had two siblings that had survived them. Theresa Wilson had the look of her sister; the same blonde hair, same green eyes, and the same build. Only a year had separated her from her sister in age. Her half-brother Hughes had been two years older.

Ken introduced himself and Howell when the woman answered the door to the expensive two story in the same neighborhood where she’d grown up, and where her brother had lived before his death. “I don’t know why you are here. I’m not going to be able to help you. I’ve told you everything I know.”

“We just have a few more questions. I know this is a big imposition.”

“I’ll tell you what’s been an imposition—the fact that my brother-in-law won’t have anything to do with us since it all happened. I’ve never even held my sister’s child.”

“She’s a beautiful little girl, and he loves her very much,” Howell said. “He’s taking care of her. If we can prove what happened was an accident, perhaps he’d change his mind?”

Mrs. Wilson looked at Howell, and Ken could see some of her antagonism slipping away. Howell looked so sincere. “Come in. My children are at school, now.”

“How many do you have?” Howell asked.

“Two. Karlyn and Kristian are eight.”

“Your nephew Landon had just turned fifteen?” Howell settled on the couch the woman indicated. “I’m really sorry we have to ask these questions again. Sometimes dredging them up hurts so much.”

“You’ve lost someone?”

“My twin brother. I was nine minutes older.”

“Karlyn is twenty-four minutes. Kristian came via cesarean.” Theresa sat delicately on the edge of a matching ladies chair. “It must have been horrible for you. My children are extremely close.”

“It was. We were only fourteen. Not much younger than your nephew. Can you tell us about that day?”

Ken had to admit, he was impressed with the seamless way Howell handled the interview. Much more skillfully than he would have expected. Theresa tensed whenever he asked a direct question, but with Howell she was much more forthcoming.

“Landon was really upset about Mandy. They were close. She was only twenty when he was born, and hadn’t had much to do with kids until Jason had Casey, followed by Landon a year later. She babysat them for several years, while Jason and his wife worked. They were so close. He found her body, and when he realized he couldn’t help her…It wasn’t like him to stay so far away from his parents, not with something of this magnitude happening. I can honestly say it doesn’t make any sense. Not to me. None of it makes sense to me.”

“Mrs. Wilson, I can promise you this. If there is more than meets the eye to what happened to your family—we will find it.”

“Thank you. But what good will it do? It won’t bring any of them back.”

“No, it won’t. Once again, I am so sorry for what happened to your brother, sister, and nephew.” Howell patted the woman on the hand, and slipped her a business card.
